Bright colour is not the whole quality story
A vibrant yellow colour can make turmeric appealing, but colour alone cannot establish quality, purity or suitability for a particular market. Importers, spice processors and food manufacturers should evaluate turmeric against documented product specifications and applicable food-safety requirements.
These six checks offer a useful starting point for sourcing conversations. The tests and limits required for a shipment depend on the product, intended use, destination and buyer agreement.
1. Curcumin content
Curcumin is a characteristic constituent of turmeric and can be an important commercial specification. The required percentage depends on the buyer’s application and the agreed grade; a higher figure is not automatically the right choice for every customer.
Request a clearly stated curcumin specification and, where appropriate, a laboratory result linked to the relevant sample or batch.
2. Moisture content
Moisture influences how dried turmeric fingers and powder store and handle. Excess moisture can increase the risk of deterioration during warehousing and transport.
Agree the maximum moisture content, the testing method and appropriate packaging and storage conditions before confirming an order.
3. Pesticide residues
Pesticide residues must be assessed against the maximum residue limits (MRLs) applicable in the destination market. Requirements can vary by substance, commodity and jurisdiction.
For European buyers, verify the current EU MRL rules and decide whether a multi-residue test is appropriate for the origin, supply chain and intended shipment.
4. Microbiological quality
Microbiological assessment may include relevant pathogens and hygiene indicators, depending on the intended use and buyer requirements. Grinding and further handling do not by themselves guarantee microbiological safety.
Agree relevant acceptance criteria, sampling and any validated treatment requirements with the buyer.
5. Heavy metals and other contaminants
Turmeric may need evaluation for contaminants such as lead and other heavy metals, as well as applicable mycotoxins. Testing needs should reflect legal limits, risk assessment and the buyer’s specification.
Ask which contaminant panel has actually been tested. A limited test report should not be presented as evidence that every possible contaminant has been checked.
6. Purity and adulteration
Authenticity matters alongside appearance. Buyers should consider foreign matter, undeclared additives and adulteration risks, including unauthorised colourants.
A clear product description, supplier assessment, traceability and appropriate analytical testing help support purchasing decisions.
A practical checklist before placing an order
Before agreeing on a turmeric shipment, align the specification and supporting evidence with the buyer’s intended use and destination.
- Specify turmeric form, variety or grade and intended application.
- Agree curcumin, moisture and other relevant physical specifications.
- Confirm destination-specific pesticide residue and contaminant requirements.
- Agree microbiological and authenticity testing where relevant.
- Check sample identity, batch traceability and available test reports.
- Document packing, labelling, shipment terms and acceptance criteria.
