Why price alone is not enough
The lowest quotation for turmeric from India may not represent the best value. International buyers should compare quality, safety, traceability, packaging and delivery reliability against their own destination requirements.
1. Curcumin content
Agree on the turmeric variety, grade and curcumin specification appropriate for your intended use. Ask for representative lot-linked test results where relevant; a higher curcumin value is not always necessary.
2. Pesticide residues
Confirm the maximum residue limits (MRLs) applicable in the importing country. For European buyers, check the current EU Pesticides Database and agree on appropriate testing.
3. Aflatoxins and microbiological safety
Determine the relevant mycotoxin and microbiological acceptance criteria, sampling approach and tests. If steam sterilization or another validated treatment is required, discuss this before placing the order.
4. Heavy metals
Check applicable food contaminant limits, including lead and other relevant heavy metals. Ensure the laboratory report actually covers the parameters you require.
5. Moisture and physical quality
For whole turmeric fingers, check dryness, cleanliness, mould, infestation, foreign matter and damage. For powder, also agree on mesh size, moisture and protection during storage and transport.
6. Processing and polishing
Ask whether turmeric fingers are unpolished, single polished or double polished. Confirm how the turmeric powder is processed and packed, and whether the method suits the destination and intended use.
7. Supplier verification
Verify exporter identity, registrations, sourcing and processing arrangements, batch traceability and experience. A trading supplier may work with third-party processors; assess the actual supply chain.
8. Documentation and compliance
Confirm the commercial invoice, packing list, origin documentation, phytosanitary certificate where required, and any agreed inspection or laboratory reports. Requirements depend on the destination and shipment.
9. Consistency from shipment to shipment
Agree on measurable specifications, sampling, packaging, lot identification and a process for managing deviations. Consistent repeat quality matters more than an attractive first quotation.
What to include in a turmeric sourcing enquiry
Tell the supplier your destination, quantity, product form, variety, curcumin and moisture specifications, required tests, packaging, delivery terms and documentation.
